Reminder from China's Airport Codes

Few people may realize that Beijing's Capital Airport is coded as PEK, Guangzhou's Baiyun Airport as CAN, Nanjing's Lukou Airport as NKG, Chongqing's Jiangbei Airport as CKG, Qingdao Airport as TAO, and the lesser-known Zhengzhou Airport as CGO. These codes reflect a time when these cities were familiar to the Western world. As China's airport system began to develop, it naturally adopted the romanization practices prevalent at the time.

The Cantonese language played a significant role in shaping China's early diplomatic interactions with the Western world. English-language world history textbooks used in Hong Kong from the 1970s to the 1990s referred to Beijing as Peking, Qingdao as Tsingtao, Nanjing as Nanking, and Guangzhou as Canton. In the late Qing dynasty, the Wade-Giles romanization system became widely adopted and served as the standard method for transliterating Chinese words until the introduction of Hanyu Pinyin in 1958. The preservation of the original names of prominent institutions such as Tsinghua University and Peking University in Beijing serves as a reminder of this historical legacy.

By the 1970s, Hanyu Pinyin (漢語拼音) had become widely used as China actively promoted Putonghua (Mandarin) as the nation's official common language. Unfortunately, this effort often came at the expense of local dialects and regional languages, which were frequently suppressed or even banned in schools. Overzealous attempts to demonstrate loyalty to a unified language policy can sometimes backfire, particularly in a world where preserving cultural heritage has become increasingly important. If this trend continues, we may witness the extinction of Cantonese and many other Chinese dialects, a tragic loss for linguistic and cultural diversity.

Lifestyle Game Changers in the Past 5 Decades

When contemplating the most impactful inventions that have reshaped lifestyles worldwide over the past half-century, it is difficult to dispute that the Internet, emerging in the 1970s and gaining widespread popularity in the 1980s, stands as the unequivocal pioneer. Its advent brought about a paradigm shift in the way we interact and communicate. Nowadays, the practice of sending physical letters or Christmas cards has become a rarity.

Then, in the 1990s, a remarkable development unfolded with the emergence of Facebook, masterminded by an MIT graduate Mark Zuckerberg. This groundbreaking platform revolutionized the way individuals, communities, and businesses connected with one another. As a result, the world witnessed an unprecedented proliferation of social media platforms that forever changed how information impacted people's actions and decisions.

In 2007, Apple made a groundbreaking announcement - the iPhone. This revolutionary device completely transformed the world of personal portable communication. Not just a mobile phone, the iPhone introduced the concept of Apps, which in turn revolutionized entertainment and creative work distribution. It had a profound impact on the business landscape, leading to the demise of traditional models while opening up a multitude of new opportunities.

In the 2010s, Tesla revolutionized the electric vehicle industry, bringing about a surge in popularity. Prior to Tesla's emergence, electric vehicles were largely unappealing, and despite governments' attempts to encourage the adoption of green transportation, advancements were minimal. Tesla, however, successfully transformed the perception of electric vehicles through their introduction of impressive long-range capabilities, innovative designs, autopilot systems, and user-friendly interfaces.

Finally, in November 2022, a remarkable milestone was achieved when OpenAI introduced its revolutionary Large Language Model (LLM) chatbot application, CHATGPT. Within a mere five days, this innovative creation managed to captivate the interest of over one million eager users. Astoundingly, within just three months, its user base soared to an estimated 100 million individuals. The CHATGPT is no ordinary chatbot; it possesses the ability to provide insightful responses and analyze information in a manner strikingly reminiscent of human thought. As a result, it has become a game-changer, altering the lives of people across all professions and industries.

It is worth noting that all of these game changers were invented by Americans, with some originating from small business startups. This naturally prompts the question: What is it about Americans that fosters such creativity and enables them to have such a profound and far-reaching impact on the world? Would it be an environment of openness, general respect of diversity, unrestricted flow of information, and the freedom to think and talk?

Cathay scandal, out of proportion and out of context!

Can anyone make sense of blaming an entire airline company, or even labeling it as "Hong Kong's shame," for a mistake made by only three cabin crews out of a staff of more than 20,000? Does this one error truly justify such severe condemnation of the company's staff training?  Our Chief Executive certainly seems to think so, as he made his open condemnation of the three crew members, but let's not forget that just a month ago, our Security Chief cautioned the public against exaggerating or generalizing the actions of a small group of badly behaved police officers.

Moreover, let's be clear: the supposed "mistake" made by the three cabin crews is not technically a mistake at all. It was merely a private conversation among colleagues that unfortunately got overheard by an eavesdropper with a recording device. Sure, it may have been a display of poor work ethic, bad behavior, and even downright stupidity, as it happened in the workplace! Think about it this way: if two waiters in a restaurant were to talk trash about their customers, would that be considered wrongdoing? Nope, they have the freedom of speech. But of course, it's not exactly professional to do so in front of customers who might overhear. Let's not pretend like this kind of thing doesn't happen in other professions too. I mean, have you ever heard doctors or teachers privately discussing how dumb their patients or students are? It's not exactly uncommon.

Apparently, some people in the government and media just had to blow this whole thing out of proportion and act like it's the end of the world. It's almost like they're trying to prove their loyalty to their Chinese superiors. Would they act this way if the situation were reversed? Doubtful.

It's a shame that Hong Kong seems to have lost its sense of fairness and rationality. Can we all just take a chill pill and realize that not every mistake deserves a public shaming?

No! No!」

Japan tops the most likeable country list!

Since Japan reopened to foreign visitors, it has been on the top of the priority list for the starved tourists all over Asia. Over 90% of Hong Kong people have put Japanese cities as their first and preferred destinations.
The likeableness of Japan is self-evident, as thousands have rushed to pack their luggage for a Japanese holiday since October. Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Nagoya, Sapporo, Fukuoka, ..., are all on the booking list. Airlines have been resuming flights to Japanese cities as first-tier destinations, amidst the slowly recovering flight capacity. Other Asian cities apparently don't get a proportionate share!

As a post-pandemic observation, countries having this level of charm do reflect a cultural strength and soft power that took years to build. The variety of attractions Japan offers is amazing, from beef rice bowls to fine omakase dining, concert halls to vinyl cafes, designer brands to vintage, city walk to natural scenic hike, homestay to hot spring resorts, and general to subcultural interests, all representing a very unique destination for visitors with different interests. More importantly, Japanese society is generally admired by visitors for being polite, patient, friendly, fair, and subtly sophisticated. The many small details, which people could hardly recall one by one, have added up to make people feel the comfort and peace of mind, including the friendly facilities, the aestheticity of Japanese design, advanced yet subtle technology, clean and calm environment, the feeling of safety, etc. You don't get to see people shout in subways or dance with noisy loudspeaker music in parks or public squares!

It's interesting to probe a bit into what makes a country so likeable, or on the contrary so unlikeable! After the three years of the pandemic, we clearly see the differences and find part of the answers being rooted in the way a country is run, how people are educated and what values they hold.

It's time to make a turn!

Hair Salons — Subtly Indispensable!

Have you ever thought seriously about what has been truly indispensable to you?

The two-year-long pandemic has trained people to tolerate the absence of facilities that used to be considered essential or to find alternatives to the activities they used to enjoy. Most people have now got used to living without fitness centres, sports venues, cinemas, concert halls, and even restaurants (after 6pm), but not hair salons!

Seeing the aggressive fifth wave of covid, Hong Kong Government panickedly added barbershops and hair salons in early February to the list of business venues that were ordered to close.  But in less than a month, the government decided to allow barbershops and hair salons to reopen, after realizing the subtle but desperate need for getting a haircut by most people!  Other businesses were jealous of such exclusive privilege to reopen.

The importance of barbershops and hair salons has obviously been underestimated or totally unnoticed. Only until now when Government ordered their closure that people seriously felt their vitality! On the day before closure, we saw long queues of people outside almost all QB House branches rushing to get a haircut, and on the first day of reopening, we again saw long queues of people fearing possible sudden reclosure of barbershops. What a phenomenon!

My 80-year-old father-in-law rushed to get his first jab of covid vaccine just for the sake of getting access to his favourite barbershop!

How time flies: Predicting when your life shall end

Every summer vacation in primary school was like a never ending holiday, and in my mind, still, the six years in primary school were very long, and definitely much longer than the seven years in secondary school. My memories of the days in the 2000s and 2010s are like yesterday, but those of my primary school days are much older history, disproportionally older! One thing for sure is that the perception of time duration gets shorter as one becomes older! In other words, time moves faster when you get older! So, depending on how old you are, your perception of a 10-year duration can be quite different!

The perceived absolute time also changes as one gets older! When you're young, you felt things that happened 40 years ago were like ancient history! But as you get older, things that happened 40 years ago seemed really not that long ago to you!

You probably still find the music of the 2010s pretty good. Way back, when you're a kid, your perception of the music that your mother loved was like ancient tune! The perception of time clearly changes as you grow older! That seems to be unavoidable, and you can do nothing to revert it. The question is not why, but how fast? Can we possibly work out how fast our perceived time shrinks? If you know the answer, you probably know how rapidly you age and perhaps also when your life shall end (disregarding accidental life-threatening events).

Taking another perspective, if our life ends at the time when our perceived time has shrunk to zero, or in practice shortened to a threshold point that life becomes almost meaningless, then one could possibly predict his own lifespan based on his own perception of time while he still lives and continues to age. This in theory should work!

Suppose your perceived time is Tperception while the actual time is T. A simple first order law that describes how rapidly your perceived time shrinks with time is:

Tperception = T exp( –T / τ )

where the parameter τ determines how fast (by how much) your perception of time would shrink over a fixed time lapse. Experience suggests that time perception shortens by half at the age of 25, around the time when one finishes college and gets to the real world. This means τ is roughly 37, because exp(–25/37) ≈ 0.5.

Hong Kong's average lifespan is 88 for women and 83 for men, say 85 for any average person. Thus, our perceived time has shortened to around 10% of the actual time at the end of our life, since exp(–85/37) = 0.1. We may say that if one perceives time as 90% shorter than it actually is, life is no longer meaningful!

If you know how rapidly your perception of time shortens, i.e., the value of τ, you should theoretically know when your life shall end.
